If you thought there must be something wrong with your equipment - you were more correct than you knew. Believe it or not, a perfectly round golf ball has never been manufactured. Most are probably only slightly off-center, but even a little bit can be too much. Even if a ball isn't far enough off to cause you to miss a short putt, just the uncertainty alone can be enough to cause you to lose confidence in your stroke.
